I-65 South reopens after being shut down this weekend
A 6-mile stretch of Interstate 65 South in downtown Louisville was closed this weekend.I-65 South was be closed between I-64 and I-264.All southbound lanes and ramps was closed while construction is underway.The closure began at 8 p.m. Friday and finished at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The highway was originally scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday but crews finished early. Drivers coming into Louisville were detoured to I-64 West to I-264 East to reconnect with I-65 South.The closure allowed for improvements to hospital curve and I-65 bridges.While it's an inconvenience for drivers, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said it's necessary for safety."We look at crash data and we get it from local law enforcement," KYTC's Andrea Clifford said. "We're putting a high-friction surface course down on the pavement. It improves skid resistance. We've seen it reduce crashes in other locations where we put it down on curved ramps. It particularly helps with land departure on wet pavement."The weekend work will also include repairs on the asphalt joints of the expressway. There are 119 to replace -- 60 on one side and 59 on the other. I-65 North is expected to be closed from Oct. 20-23 for the same improvements.
