ALIEN: ROMULUS - More Social Media Reactions Land, And These Are A Little More... Balanced! (2024)

More social media reactions to Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus have been shared online, and it's probably fair to say that these are quite a bit more balanced...

The very first reactions to Alien: Romulus actually hit last week, but they were from fans who attended an early screening (and actually broke the embargo). Now, critics have shared their thoughts on Fede Alvarez's film prior to the full review embargo lifting tomorrow evening.

Though these reactions are (mostly) still pretty positive, they aren't quite as hyperbolic.

You'll find nobody calling Romulus the "best movie in the franchise" here, but it sounds like Alvarez has still managed to pull off a damn good Alien movie.

Have a read through the posts below.

Ok, the bad: ridiculous nods and callbacks to earlier movies that don't even make any sense to this story. Random lines of dialogue originally said by the likes of Hudson and Burke in Aliens. It's so unnecessary and distracting... And I'm not even getting to the big ones. pic.twitter.com/wNyVRaT3Fv

Fede Alvarez’s #AlienRomulus is gnarly, gripping & gorgeously bleak (everything from the story to Olivares’ cinematography to Wallfisch’s score). Innovatively delivering smart, savvy stuff, subtly playing the greatest hits. Cailee Spaeny & David Jonsson dominate. This rules! pic.twitter.com/kEuDZku2Oz

So happy to report @fedalvar’s #AlienRomulus is fantastic. The two hour runtime flies by and both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are so good. Loved the use of practical effects. You don’t have to have seen any of the other Alien movies to watch this. But it would help. pic.twitter.com/eo2EZxTNnj

#AlienRomulus is Don't Breathe in space. A nasty amalgamation of Scott's prequels & the first two. Fights like hell to find an identity of its own. Sometimes it does (& it's sick & twisted), others it doesn't, but Fede's tactile sets gives us the grittiest, filthiest entry yet! pic.twitter.com/1NddrwWVtA

I really enjoyed #AlienRomulus for the most part. I like how it's in the spirit of Ridley Scott's original #Alien with a few hints of James Cameron's brilliant sequel #Aliens. There's just one thing I didn't like, but that would be a spoiler. So see it for yourself at the cinema. pic.twitter.com/SxeAISzSjx

#AlienRomulus is disgusting. It starts slow and rockets into confusing. I didn’t find the characters memorable, but it makes up for that with the most grotesque scenes and creature design. It ups the ante each act and, when you think it’s over, think again. I get why its rated R. pic.twitter.com/8lwLW2fpF3

ALIEN: ROMULUS: probably the best one since ALIENS, at least in terms of the tension it creates. Definitely plays some of the greatest hits of the series but in a fun way, and Fede Álvarez directs it really well. Visually terrific, and yes, the third act is BONKERS. #AlienRomulus pic.twitter.com/tDC0LED5Ok

I worry people are over-hyping the third act of #AlienRomulus, but the movie’s a banger. It’s gross, gory, and surprising. Most of all, @fedalvar made a fun f***ing film that is worthy of the franchise’s legacy. See it in IMAX. I can’t wait to for a second time. https://t.co/CIb8gnGZV8

Fede Álvarez dials the tension & terror to eleven in #AlienRomulus. He crafts not just one of the best entries in the franchise, but the scariest since the original. Lots of cool new ideas executed immaculately here, but even cooler characters including David Jonsson’s Andy. 👽 https://t.co/HQqugnRaEr

ALIEN: ROMULUS is mostly a gratuitous nostalgia play, remixing what came before with some occasionally strong thrills, but in a franchise famous for its psychosexual weirdness, it's the safest, blandest and most vapid the series has ever been. I did not love it pic.twitter.com/n3RtpYvXgJ

"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alienfranchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulusis produced by Ridley Scott (Napoleon), who directed the original Alienand produced and directed the series’ entries Prometheus and Alien: Covenant,Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler), and Walter Hill (Alien), with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (Charlie’s Angels), Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), and Tom Moran (Unstoppable) serving as executive producers.
